Luxembourg’s capital, Luxembourg City, is one of the four official capitals and the seat of the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Luxembourgish is the official language, but French and German are used in administrative and judicial matters.

The area of the country is only 2.586 square kilometers with a population of about 635.000.

As a representative democracy with a constitutional monarch, it is headed by the Grand-Duke Henri and is the world’s only remaining grand-duchy.

The city of Luxembourg with its old quarters and fortifications was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

The history of Luxembourg is considered to begin in 963, when count Siegfried acquired a little castle, Lucilinburhuc and the surrounding area. At the end of the 13th century, the counts of Luxembourg reigned over a considerable territory. The House of Luxembourg produced 4 emperors during the High Middle Ages. The present-day state of Luxembourg first emerged at the Congress of Vienna in 1815.

Luxembourg is also a founding member of the European Union and the United Nations.
